Day one at La Salle University - Public Health in Mexico Blog with Kahlia Hickey

Hola!

Today was day one at La Salle University! It was unbelievable & quite a surreal experience! Not only does it have an on campus Starbucks, it also has a Subway!

All the academics were wonderful & incredibly sweet! We went to our first lecture, Overview of Mexican History, and the view from the room was amazing! We were able to witness smoke coming from the volcano! The lecture was very insightful & introduced many new topics, such as different political & social dynamics in Mexican history.

After our first lecture, we made our way to Casa Rosa (a bright pink building that has gorgeous gardens!) Here we had lunch, which tasted great! After hanging out for a while & relaxing in the bright, sunny weather we went & received our Student IDs! From here we were able to get a great view of the full uni! Then we went on a tour & saw the other campus, gym, & surrounding streets. It was incredible to witness the cars moving down these tight spaces!

We then went with Margo, our coordinator. We went to get sims for our phones, as well as view Condesa. We also went down to view the Metro. Our last lecture was with Dr. Ana Cristina: I’ve never had such a good lecture! She was clear, new the topic & involved the whole class in discussion. The lecture was on Intercultural Awareness & Communication.

After we finished class, Nikki, Kate & I headed home. It was dark, however it was less than a block. In Mexico you quickly realise they do not stop at red lights, it is more of a give way sign to them. Therefore it’s recommended you cross with Mexicans & you make a run for it! This is exactly what we did tonight! When we began to cross however, there was traffic coming from all directions, it was like dodgeball with cars! And there were 6 lanes! However we made it home okay & had a great dinner prepared for us by our homestay mother, Maria.

I’m honestly having an incredible time!
